Whether you are a facilities manager, an IT Manager or a Finance Director, the question of what to do with your redundant or surplus IT equipment often presents a dilemma. Should it go to landfill? Should it be broken up for scrap? Or is there another way?

Every year in the UK 1.5 million computers are dumped in landfill sites and a further 1.5 million are kept in storage not being used at all. Most organisations upgrade IT systems every three years, which is expected to create 315 million obsolete computers worldwide by 2004. Many companies have stockpiles of obsolete PCs, printers and monitors.

The Jcom disposal service involves collecting the surplus equipment and channeling it through the correct route to ensure best value for re-usable equipment or the best environmental option for electronic and electrical waste.

Once the equipment has been collected from your site we then put it through rigorous testing to determine whether the kit can be refurbished & recycled.

If refurbishment is not an option then we erase the data, salvage useable components and recycle and/or dispose in an environmentally sensitive manner in line with Industry Council for Electronic Recycling (ICER) Guidelines and the EU Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE).

Should the equipment pass through the detailed refurbishment process it is re-boxed, palletised and shrink-wrapped for protection. It is then stored in a secure warehouse facility ready for Jcom to keep its commitment by "Putting IT back to work".

Important Information:
The European Commission has already adopted a proposal for a Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and a proposal for a Directive on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) in electrical and electronic equipment. These directives will fully implemnted in August 2005, these directives will ensure that all surplus IT equipment will have to be put up for refurbishment or recycled in a environmentally friendly manner.
