You've done the easy* bits:

• You've audited all your PCs and you know what Software Licenses you need.
• You've collected all your Licenses

Now you've got to prove you're legal and this bit's not so easy!

• What will you use to keep a record of your Software Licenses?

In order to prove software license compliance more evidence is required than just a number. It is necessary to prove that the licenses are held, they cover the correct products, that upgrade pre-requisites have been met and subscriptions have not expired etc. etc.

License Reconciliation is seldom straightforward

• Several licenses may be licensing one application.
• Most licenses also cover previous versions.

Spreadsheets: Some companies set-up a spreadsheet or similar to record license information but this can be difficult to maintain e.g. it will not provide a link between upgraded licenses etc.
