Intrusion Detection (ID) is the ability to detect inappropriate, incorrect, or anomalous activity on your network.

There are two types of potential intruders that you need to protect against:

Outside Intruders
This type of intrusion involves a hacker infiltrating your system remotely across the network. The hacker will begin without any special privileges and with little information as to you system layout. There are several forms of this hacking. For example, an intruder will find it much harder if you have a firewall between them and the targeted machine. Most organisations tend to fear the outside world as being the greatest risk to their security measures, this however is not always the case.

Inside Intruders
FBI studies have revealed that 80% of intrusion and hacking attacks come from within the inside of organisations. The most common and easiest way to intrude a network is if the hacker is already familiar with the system layout and especially if the intruder is aware of the value and location of the information you have residing on your network. An inside intruder will also know your current security measures and how to get around them.
